Lucky Thirteen

Some of you wanted to know why I like the number thirteen (seen at the bottom of this post ).  Well, long, long ago in a far off land....oh wait - that's a fairy tale.....

Back in 1983 before there was internet dating (back when you had to walk barefoot in the snow ten miles one way to school), one of the TV stations here did a segment on a magazine called the Atlanta Singles Magazine.  I immediately thought "what kind of weirdos advertise in a magazine"?  But then of course my curiosity got the better of me and I had to go and buy one (a magazine, not a weirdo) to see.  All of the ads on the left side pages were from men and all of the ads on the right sides pages were from women.  I would say 98% of the men wanted a perfect ten (anyone remember that old movie?) who loved to party and that just wasn't me.  I had been a single mom for ten years and just wasn't the party-girl type.

So I had been reading some of the ads to my girlfriend and came across one that actually sounded like a normal person to me LOL  She dared me to write to him and the rest is history.  The way it worked was you wrote a letter, sealed it in an envelope, wrote a code number on the front, and put the envelope and one dollar into another envelope addressed to the magazine.  The magazine would forward the letters to the proper person and then it was up to them to contact you or not.  I had put my phone number in the letter (again, this was back in the olde days before email).  Not long after, my phone rang and someone named Jack (what kind of irony is that considering I'm Jill?) introduced himself.  We talked for hours in the evenings for a week or so and then made arrangements to meet.  After that first meeting we had a date and I can tell you I was still a little nervous even after all that talking - in the back of my mind was "what if he's really an axe murderer".  My hand was on that car door handle the whole way on that first date just in case I had to open the door and throw myself out LOL

Oh yes, back to lucky thirteen - we first met on a Friday the 13th.  We also married on a Friday the 13th.  And until the recession hit so hard, that wonderful axe murderer Jack brought me flowers on the 13th of every month for over 25 years.  So here's to what was and here's to what is and here's to lucky thirteen!

Untie a ribbon in your life – you might find an adventure!

  9. Well that turned out well.HAHAHA
No really, that is so sweet. So many of those meetings through ads turn out to be horror tales you laugh about years later.
Larry and I got married on a Friday the 13th. It turned out lucky for us too.
